Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s great comedies. It revolves around two pairs of lovers, Beatrice and Benedick, and Hero and Claudio – but of course love is never a straightforward matter.
Beatrice and Benedick fight a “merry war”, loudly proclaiming their scorn for love, marriage and each other, while Hero and Claudio – not yet casualties on the field of love – are content to whisper sweet nothings. But Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar, and it is left to Dogberry, the bumbling Constable of the Watch, and to Beatrice and Benedick themselves, to unwittingly ensure the course of love runs smooth.
